The Lenten Challenge

The Temptations 4:3 If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread In the desert the Israelites didn‟t trust God to provide them with what they needed, when they needed it. So they complained about God‟s apparent lack of concern to Moses and Aaron. Ex. 16:3 and [they] said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” Jesus refused to use His power for His own benefit. Instead, He accepts whatever God wills.

When Israel was faced with a test of hunger they didn‟t trust God. Jesus triumphs over Satan because He did trust God. Jesus responds with a quote from the Torah (Deuteronomy 8:3). 3 And He humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know; that He might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but that man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord. The 2nd Temptation 5 Then the devil took Him to the holy city, and made Him stand on the parapet of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: „He will command His angels concerning you and „with their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.‟”

According to tradition the Messiah is viewed as the spring in the wilderness that gave both water and life to Israel (Ex. 17:7). Moses struck the rock, water flowed, and he named the place Massah which means „testing‟ or „trial‟ Again Jesus passes Satan‟s test with a quote from the Torah. Deuteronomy 6:16 “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test” Jesus refuses to “test” the Father by demanding from Him an extraordinary show of power.

The Third Temptation 8 Then the devil took Him up to a very high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, 9 and he said to Him, “All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me.” Israel failed this same test in the desert when they made and worshiped the “Golden Calf.” Jesus again triumphs with a quote from the Torah. Jesus refusal is expressed in His paraphrase of Deut 6:13.

Satan’s Temptations of Eve It‟s interesting Satan‟s temptations of Eve in the Garden of Eden correspond to those of Jesus in the desert. Satan appealed to the physical appetite (Gen. 3:1-3; Matt. 4:3), the desire for personal gain (Gen. 3:4-5; Matt. 4:6), and an easy path to power or glory (Gen. 3:5-6; Matt. 4:8-9). And in each case Satan altered God‟s Word when he promised, “you shall not die” (Gen. 3:4;Matt. 4:6).
