Dr. Pettit conducts critical research into the dynamic behaviors of ice divides, the movement of glaciers, and the formation of glacial ice cliffs. Dr. Pettit teaches within the Earth and Space Science Department at University of Washington, but also runs the highly unique and successful ‘Girls on Ice Program’ which combines leadership, mountaineering and science for girls 15-18 years old. Designed for Inquisitive, adventurous girl who would like to learn more about scientific inquiry, research, careers in science and the Northwest environment it is a field based learning experience. 2007 SEA AWARD WINNER: TERRIE WILLIAMS - Marine biologist Terrie Williams’ has worked in Antarctica conducting scientific investigations concerning the feeding biology of Weddell seals. These large seals must hunt and capture fish while diving under the frozen Antarctic sea ice. Weddell seals travel to great depths in freezing, dark water where the pressure is so high that it squeezes their lungs to a fraction of their normal size… 2007 AWARD FOR COURAGE: CONSTANZA CERUTI - Argentina’s Constanza Ceruti is the only female Andean high-altitude archaeologist in the world. She developed her interest early in life! At the early age of 10 she was fascinated by anthropology, ancient religions, and nature. By age 14 she knew high-altitude archaeology in her native Argentina was the perfect way to combine all of these interests and passions. Dr. Ceruti earned a degree in anthropology from the University of Buenos Aires and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Cuyo in Mendoza. Currently a professor at Catholic University in Salta, Argentina, Ceruti specializes in exploring and excavating Inca Empire ceremonial centers on the summits of sacred Andean mountains. On the summit of volcano, Llullaillaco - the site of the highest archaeological work ever undertaken - Dr. Ceruti and her partner discovered three of the best preserved mummies in the world. She has climbed and performed archaeological research on over one hundred mountains above 16,500 feet (5,029 meters), many climbs are solo, but that isn’t all… in order to reach the bases of some of these distant peaks, she has endured lightning storms, blizzards, gale winds, low oxygen levels, frostbite, and 60-mile (97-kilometer) hikes! THEN the seals must capture their prey while holding their breath! The question is, how do they do it? Dr. Williams led an expedition to answer this question so we may better understand the biology of the animals living in the Antarctic ecosystem. Dr. William’s research observations of Antarctica’s Weddell seals has led to breakthroughs in the understanding of the seals’ lung capacity and ability to conserve energy. More importantly, these discoveries have implications that global warming may ultimately upset the delicate balance of seal populations and their prey.
