Pyrolysis of tyres:  Pyrolysis of tyres Ryszard Wasielewski, Rafał Bigda, Sławomir Stelmach Environmental Problem (1):  Environmental Problem (1) The amount of waste tyres is estimated to be on the level of 2,5 mln Mg/y in European Union and over 130 thou. Mg/y in Poland. Environmental Problem (2):  Environmental Problem (2) Waste tyres and these non suitable for retreading are numbered 16 01 03 in Waste Catalogue as a non dangerous waste. European Union Directive 99/31/EC will forbid tyre storage since 2006. It is necessary to achieve 75% level of reclamation of tyres introduced into the market as well as tyre recycling 15% level (without retreading) in Poland, starting from 2007. The tyre reclamation level was 50% and recycling one – 6% in 2004. In 2005 the mentioned levels are 60% and 9%, respectively. Pyrolysis is a thermochemical process consisting in conversion (decomposition) of organic compounds during heating in oxygen-free atmosphere. Pyrolysis of waste tyres (2) :  Pyrolysis of waste tyres (2) Products. As a result of pyrolysis of waste tyres one obtains: high energy gas, hydrocarbon oils, char and steel. The ratios of the first three products depend on process conditions, mainly on temperature. Application of the products. The high energy gas may be utilized as a source of energy for the pyrolysis process. The pyrolytic oil may be used as a fuel independently or mixed with diesel fuel in different ratios. The char after additional processing may be used as a carbon black substitute or precursor of carbon adsorbents. Advantages of pyrolysis in relation to car tyres:  Advantages of pyrolysis in relation to car tyres Enables manipulation of smaller gas streams, thus, dimensions of cleaning installation are lesser. The pyrolytic gas formed satisfy energetic needs for pyrolysis process. Besides energy recovery from pyrolytic gas combustion, the valuable liquid products and char are obtained, which may become commercial products after additional processing. There are many technological variants of the process. As a result of waste tyres pyrolysis one may obtain valuable chemical semi-products or fuels. The full utilization of the waste tyres pyrolysis products is possible after their further processing. Popularization of technology of waste tyres pyrolysis is restricted by economical reasons connected with profitability of further processing od pyrolysis products.
