Your profile is a part of your personal branding Realize that your LinkedIn profile is part of your personal branding. The information and photograph on your profile will reflect on how people perceive you!
How would you want people to perceive you? What personality, qualities or skills do you want to project in your profile? Happy, professional, eager to learn, serious, etc… Use the right facial expression (smiling; looking seriously, etc.) to portrait your desired quality.
Use your image to strengthen your abilities You can use your profile image to strengthen your profession ability by adapting perceptions of your profession in the photograph: a photographer should have a photograph in his personal photographic style; a designer should have the most unique image in his network and a sales man should be able to sell himself with his photograph.
Decide if you want to be recognized An image with your face clearly visible, gives the feeling that you are an open person. If you want people to perceive you as a reachable person, while staying as anonymous possible on the web, you might want to consider using a side profile photograph, silhouette or an illustration of yourself.
Don’t use a full length portrait (head to toe) The image on your profile is small and no one will recognize you or see any of the details. Using a full length portrait would be the same as putting a photograph of a tree with you hiding behind it.
The influence of the background color A bright background color, high contrast between the background and your hair color and/or clothes, can attrack attention to your photograph and your profile.
The influence of your clothing colors Think Image Styling: a blue suit means authority, while a yellow dress means innovation; dark shades refer to luxury, while light shades are considered to be cheap; clear colors are fresh, while grayish colors are linked with old fashion.
Visual perception accents in the details Pay attention to small perception details like: a view downwards gives a perception of small, while a view upwards is perceived as big; round is fun, while square is formal; facing right means progressive, while facing left hints in the direction of authority.
Good imitations are better than bad originals View photographs of profiles similar to yours. Look for a photograph that, in your opinion, portrays a good image of the profile content you are looking at. Try to imitate the style of this ideal photograph.
