China developed this mixed economy because it began having major economic problems. Gov’t now allows privately owned businesses and created special economic zones where foreign business people could own companies. This has helped China’s economic boom . It’s the world’s 2 nd largest economy today. Agriculture and Industry: Agriculture and Industry More Chinese work in agriculture than any other activity. 10% of China’s land is good for farming and more than half of all Chinese are farmers. Chinese cut terraces into hillsides for extra farmland. Industry and manufacturing are now the most profitable part of China’s economy. Taiwan: Taiwan Chinese settled Taiwan in the 600s . Both China and Japan have owned the island. In 1949, Nationalists of China’s civil war fled to Taiwan and took over. They ruled the island under Martial Law (military rule) for 38 years. Today Taiwan’s gov’t is a multi-party democracy and functions as an independent country. American and European customs are also noticeable. Taiwan Today: Taiwan Today Population of about 23 million . Most people live in the western coastal plain because Taiwan is mountainous. Capital is Taipei and is the country’s financial center. Overcrowding and environmental problems are occurring in Taipei. Taipei is one of Asia’s richest and most industrialized countries.
