Chapter 1 Summary of Coal Water Slurry:  Chapter 1 Summary of Coal Water Slurry 1.1 Concept of Coal Water Slurry Coal water slurry(CWS for short) is a mixture of water and coal. First pulverize coal to a certain degree(average granularity is about 50μm), mix with water according to proper proportion (coal:water=[(65~70):(30~35)] and then add a little additive (about 1%),thus coal water two-phase flow is formed after strong agitation. In the 1960s,small test of direct combustion of CWS was tried in America,former Soviet Union and West Germany. Though satisfactory results obtained, it came to ceasing due to economic reasons. At the beginning of 1970s, due to worldwide oil crisis, Some developed countries such as America,Sweden,Italy, Britain, Japan,Russia and so on,invested a lot of man power, material and money in CWS preparation, storage, transportation and combustion technology and were engaged in R&D of it. R&D of CWS technology in China was started at the beginning of 1980s. After more than 20 years of efforts,China’s CWS technology has reached the international advanced level and entered upon a commercial operation stage. Usually additive dosage accounts for about 1% of the total. Additive is the main factor of making CWS, which is also one of the key factors affecting CWS quality. Based on function, additive can be classified into: Dispersant Stabilizing agent Other auxiliary chemical agent Defoaming agent Modifying agent for PH values Mould inhibitor Surface modifying agent Accelerant Among them,dispersant and stabilizing agent are uppermost.
