The majority of Canadians are personally affected by adoption. In fact, 6 in 10 Canadians have had personal experience with adoption. In a domestic and an international adoption, the biological parents give up all their rights to their child. In the case of international adoption, it is permanent. In domestic adoptions, the birth parents has a certain amount of time where they can take the baby back. 37.5% of adoptions are done through private agencies Only 2% of unmarried women choose to place their child for adoption. Only 1% of teen pregnancies result in immediate adoption placements. A child in foster care can wait up to five years to be adopted; the average of which is 8 years old. Each year, 20% of children (26,517 in 2007) exit foster care at age 18 without an adoptive family.
